It's one of the most successful opensource clones of Minecraft. The basic gameplay tends to be similar but can be changed due integrated mod-support.
The game was once named as "Minetest-c55" and made from its dev "celeron55" just to, quote, "show my friends how f*cking superior I am at programming compared to them!".
He then released the sources and a strong community helped with further developement.
Unlike Minecraft it is not using Java-Code. Instead, it's based on C++, the Irrlicht-engine and LUA-Scripts. S
